Efficacy of diode laser to reduce the postoperative pain in patients undergoing second stage of dental implant surgery: case-control study

摘要

Purpose

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of 940 nm diode lasers with conventional surgical procedure in clinical success of second-stage of dental implant surgery.

Methods

Sixty patients with sixty complete osseointegrated dental implants were included in the study, Patients were assigned into two main groups: (1) Second stage of dental implant surgery with 940 nm diode laser (lase group) and (2) Second stage of dental implant surgery with surgical scalpel (control group). patients. Postoperative pain was investigated using 10 mm Visual Analog System. Also, bleeding rate and mean analgesics consumption was compared between two groups.

Results

Mean analgesics consumption was significantly lower in laser-treated groups (p < 0.001). Pain intensity in laser groups was significantly lower in 2 and 3 postoperative days in laser group (p = 0.023 and p = 0.032 respectively). Whereas, there was no significant difference in terms of intraoperative bleeding (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

Since diode lasers are economical and accessible devices and can be used in clinical fields. It is recommended to use diode laser as a adjuvant therapy to reduce postoperative pain in patients undergoing second stage of dental implants surgery.
