<p>Several studies have suggested that action videogame experience improves attentional tasks, but its effects on emotional perception remain uncertain. The present preregistered study aimed to explore whether individuals classified as action videogame players (AVGPs) exhibit heightened vigilance in the presence of emotional stimuli compared to non-videogame players (NVGPs). Seventy-eight participants were assigned to each group based on self-reported gaming experience. Participants engaged in a dual-task paradigm comprising a central emotion discrimination task and a peripheral task where they needed to detect changes in Gabor stimuli. Results from a one-way MANOVA indicated a distinct vigilance pattern between the two groups. AVGPs exhibited better performance in the central task, identifying more face matrices and making fewer errors compared to NVGPs. No significant differences in average scanning time emerged between groups, although AVGPs demonstrated enhanced detection of peripheral changes. Regression analyses demonstrated that NVGPs exhibited a more pronounced decrease in the percentage of correctly detected Gabors as central task performance improved and required more scanning time to achieve comparable levels of Gabor detection compared to AVGPs. Additionally, emotional conditions exerted a significant impact on scanning percentage, although both groups showed similar tendencies. There was a shorter scanning time in the Angry crowd-Happy discrepant condition compared to the Neutral crowd-Happy discrepant condition. Overall, our findings suggest that AVGPs can expand their attentional scope while maintaining proficiency in central task, irrespective of emotional content, thereby sustaining vigilance towards peripheral stimuli.</p>
