摘要

Carers are more prone to mental illness than other professions, due to the challenges of interaction work. Interaction work describes involvement of feelings when dealing with those in need of care, namely cooperation work, sentimental work, emotional labour and subjectifying action. This article investigates the research question whether and how this also applies to persons caring for a relative at home. Using the occupational stress model, it was possible to demonstrate by examples of the study “Zeiten der Pflege” (Rinderspacher et al. 2009) the mechanism of action of interaction work as a stressor and coping strategies, with the resources for maintaining the health of caring relatives. These include interaction work aptitudes and supportive care networks. In the health system, there is a lack of counselling and support for carers of a close relative who have reached serious exhaustion. Furthermore, caring for partners and close relatives is mentally especially stressful.

Practical Relevance: Caring for relatives at home constitutes the principal proportion of care of the elderly in Germany: 4.42 million elderly persons receiving care are looked after at home by relatives (spouses and children), 1 Mio. with support from outpatient retreatment nurses (Statistisches Bundesamt 2022). Caring relatives are more prone to mental illness. There is thus a danger that fewer elderly and sick persons can be cared for at home.
