Sustainable Coastal Zone Management of Lake and River Mouths
摘要
River Mouth is end of a river (or called estuary or a confluence), where it flows into a larger body of water such as another river, a bay / gulf, lake, a sea or an ocean. At the lake and river mouths sediments are often deposited due to slowing of current reducing the carrying capacity at the mouth. The change in flow conditions at mouth, can cause deposition of sediment it is carrying and shifting of mouth towards north on the east coast of India. This sediment deposit needs to be removed by dredging and conventional dredging is possible only after construction of training walls. The periodic maintenance dredging in between the training walls will ensure sustainability of mouth opening. Drag flow dredger mounted on Jack up platform can be an alternative to conventional floating barge dredger. Coastal Zone Management involves managing Coastal areas to balance environmental, economic, human health and human activities. In this paper, the sustainable development of Chilika Lake mouth, Haripur and Markandi river Mouths and Ariyankuppam River mouth are presented. The satellite imagery study to monitor the chilika lake mouth opening, training wall associated with dredging of Haripur and Markandi river mouths and the newly developed Jackup barge with drag flow pump for dredging in the surf zone of Ariyankuppam River mouth is reported.
