<p>The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (EU) in 2016 seems to have unleashed a&#xa0;new era of political instability marked by several government changes, early elections and the beginning of the unravelling of the two-party system. However, many of these changes had been underway decades before the referendum on EU membership. This article argues that Brexit has exposed and accelerated the long-term trends that have contributed to the fragmentation of the party system, high levels of electoral volatility and the emergence of multiparty politics.</p>

摘要
