The Brexit effect on the British party system: the implosion of the Westminster model
摘要
The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (EU) in 2016 seems to have unleashed a new era of political instability marked by several government changes, early elections and the beginning of the unravelling of the two-party system. However, many of these changes had been underway decades before the referendum on EU membership. This article argues that Brexit has exposed and accelerated the long-term trends that have contributed to the fragmentation of the party system, high levels of electoral volatility and the emergence of multiparty politics.
