摘要

Using a panel survey of children in fifth and sixth grade in the region of Giessen, Germany, this study examines the level, the individual determinants and development of democratic knowledge. This article also examines the relationship between democratic knowledge and the consequences for the evaluation of democracy. Several conclusions can be drawn from empirical findings. Even young children are familiar with the central principles of democracy, and their knowledge increases over time. However, the empirical results show that political knowledge among children is not equally distributed. Children who attend grammar school, were born in Germany, speak German at home and are interested in politics show a higher level of knowledge about democracy. Furthermore, the empirical analyses also show consistent positive correlations between democratic knowledge and the evaluation of democracy. Children with greater knowledge of democracy tend to rate democracy more favorably.
