<p>The granting of patents on entomopathogenic nematodes protects technological knowledge for the development of the bioinsecticide industry for crop protection. The objective of this study was to review the state of the art on patents granted over the past 38&#xa0;years and analyse them according to their importance for the development of the industry. An international search of granted patents was conducted using The Lens search engine using the keywords <i>Steinernema</i> or <i>Heterorhabditis</i>. Documents not directly related to the search topic and those showing repetitiveness within their patent family were excluded. Subsequently, a patent citation analysis was performed using the PatCite application in The Lens. The search yielded 272 granted patents, of which 39 were linked by mutual citations. The first patent was granted in 1982 and addresses technology for the rearing of infective juvenile nematodes. The general trend reflected fluctuations of 1 to 10 patents granted per year, indicating a lack of sustained interest among inventors or companies in developing and/or registering their inventions. Kvasenkov, O.I. from the Russian Federation stood out as the leading inventor with 176 granted patents. The main route of cited patents with the highest sum of search path link code index values corresponded to the Formulation cluster. Regarding technological categories of patents, application methods and formulation predominated.</p>
