Insecticidal efficacy and chemical profile of Handroanthus impetiginosus extracts for sustainable management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella)

Coffee (Coffea spp.) is one of the most economically important crops worldwide, providing livelihoods for millions of farmers. However, its production is severely threatened by the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella), a major insect pest that reduces photosynthetic capacity and causes significant yield losses of up to 70%. Conventional chemical insecticides are commonly used for its management, but their long-term application raises concerns regarding environmental contamination and pest resistance. In search of sustainable alternatives, this study evaluated the insecticidal activity and chemical profile of ethanolic extracts derived from the bark, flowers, leaves, and seeds of Handroanthus impetiginosus against different developmental stages of L. coffeella. Coffee leaves infested with eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults were treated with 1% solutions to these extracts. The seed extract exhibited the highest efficacy, reducing egg hatching by 63%, preventing pupal development, and completely inhibiting adult oviposition. The leaf extract caused 100% larval mortality, matching the performance of the synthetic insecticide flupyradifurone after 7 days of exposure. Chemical analysis by UPLC-ESI-QTOF identified naphthoquinones, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds as major constituents of the extracts, with the seed and leaf extracts showing the highest concentration of naphthoquinones, which likely contributed to the observed insecticidal activity. No phytotoxic effects were detected on treated coffee plants at a concentration of 1%. These findings suggest that H. impetiginosus extracts, particularly from seeds and leaves, possess significant biopesticide potential and could provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for managing L. coffeella in coffee crops.
