Exploring the Impact of Virtual Reality Coaching on Students with Learning Disabilities in Physical Education: a Pilot Mixed-Methods Study

The integration of technology into educational settings has revolutionized teaching and learning processes across various disciplines. Physical education is increasingly benefiting from technological advancements, particularly through the use of virtual reality. This study explores the impact of virtual reality coaching on the motivation, opinions, and response patterns of students with learning disabilities in the context of physical education. This research assesses the effectiveness of employing virtual reality as a coaching tool. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study investigates the potential of virtual reality coaching for students with learning disabilities in physical education. Participants, aged 16 to 21 years, underwent data collection via interviews, surveys, and observations. The research team gauged student opinions and attitudes toward virtual reality in physical education using the virtual reality coach app. The research findings indicated that students expressed a preference for the familiar traditional classroom setting significantly, and the response patterns varied, as students were undecided between virtual reality coaching and traditional methods. Results indicate a significant increase in motivation post-virtual reality coaching, with students finding the virtual reality coach app intriguing and beneficial for training. In comparison to traditional physical education settings, virtual reality coaching significantly increased motivation and engagement, due to its immersive and interactive nature. The findings contribute to innovative and novel coaching strategies to enhance participation and performance in physical education. Further studies are warranted to delve deeper into the potential of virtual reality coaching for learning disabilities.
