From paths to places: analyzing pedestrian trajectories and built environment factors for walkability and attractive area detection

Walkability, a key objective in new urbanism planning, offers personal, social, and environmental benefits. To encourage walking, it is essential to understand pedestrians’ interests and priorities, which can be inferred from their walking behaviours, or trajectories. This study uses trajectory data from a central region in Tehran, Iran, to examine the walkability patterns of pedestrians in two phases. First, the relationships between influential built environment factors and the stopping points of routes are ananlyzed using both linear and non-linear models to highlight the effects of these factors. Next, Kernel Density Estimation and the detour ratio are applied to detect patterns of stop points and delineate attractive areas in the study area. The findings indicate that land use-related factors are more pronounced in mid-range areas, and attractive areas are strongly associated with retail stores and eating establishments. Based on these findings, we provide nuanced recommendations for the development of attractive, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods.
