Goethes aphoristische Romane
摘要
One of the distinctive features of Goethe’s late novels is their treatment of aphorisms within the European tradition extending back to antiquity. The Lehrjahre introduce concise maxims in separate collections through the form and interpretive framework of the »Lehrbrief«; the Wahlverwandtschaften in the manner of a confession in »Ottilies Tagebuch« and Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre in two extensive bundles of aphorisms; the »Betrachtungen im Sinne der Wanderer« and »Aus Makariens Archiv«. In addition, aphorisms are embedded in the continuous narrative of the novels. In their structure, Goethe’s late novels constitute a self-referential whole, pointing towards the modern novel and requiring new modes of reading.
