摘要

There is an interplay between visual metaphors in the design of characters, spaces, or objects, auditory elements and game mechanics in current video games that stretch over long sequences. These metaphors are either marked as such narratively (e.g., as dreams, sketches) or duplicated in conjunction with visual or auditory representations of the target domains, making them very prominent and easy to detect. The article develops a dense multimodal annotation scheme with the software ELAN to capture the concrete metaphors used, as well as their source and target areas, and describes how video games allow more levels of expression in game mechanics and interface metaphors, but still mostly rely on a very conventionalized metaphor mapping.
