摘要

This paper investigates the role of polyfunctional connectors in contributing to the poeticity of a text. To this end a linguistic analysis of Bachmann’s Radio-Essays is conducted, focusing on the German connector aber as a case study. The main functions of aber, as described in scholarly literature and grammars, are identified and analysed within the texts. The connector primarily serves as a text organiser and is fundamentally concessive in meaning. The analysis reveals several instances in which aber expresses more than one function simultaneously. Particularly notable are cases in which the connector not only acts as a text organiser but also operates on an illocutionary level, thereby making aspects of the dialogic structure of the radio-essays more apparent.
