<p>Reading gestures reveal the extent to which the whole body is involved in reading. At the interface of the body and the book, this article explores the movements that anticipate, frame, and accompany the process of reading. Selected examples illustrate how literary texts have self-reflectively shaped the diversity of reading gestures through the ages, from the tales of the <i>Arabian Nights</i> to the prose of Friederike Mayröcker. Reading and handling books leave physical traces that prove to be characteristic of the scenes of reading in which books and affects (pleasure, fear, disgust) are inseparable.</p>
