<p>This paper aims to discuss and ultimately to strengthen quantifying approaches as a&#xa0;starting point for historical semantic questions. From an inventory of recent semantic studies, it first formulates a&#xa0;basic theoretical position oriented towards Hermann Paul, which then forms the framework of the paper. Following a&#xa0;methodological discussion of so-called quantitative semantics as part of digital literary studies, the approach of ›quantifying historical semantics‹ is developed, using the example of the historical concept ›darkness‹, represented by different lexemes, across six perspectives (lexematic, linguistic, textual, text-type-specific, contextual, and cultural-historical). Both digital and analog procedures for corpus-based queries, the organisation of data and the visualisation of results are used. The conclusion summarises the extent to which quantifying historical semantics represents a&#xa0;reliable method and offers added value for the history of meaning.</p>
