摘要

Concepts of the inner huote can be found in discourses on courtly love and marriage as well as in the discourse on salvation. Against the background of the semantic range of Middle High German huote and Latin custodia, as recorded in scholarly dictionaries, sermons by Bernhard of Clairvaux and the didactic poem Minneburg are used as case studies to show, across languages and discourses, how the inner huote is described by means of external instances with recourse to the image of a castle to be defended. In the selected texts rhetorical features such as metaphor, personification and allegory illustrate that in the case of the inner huote subject and object may coincide. The analysis does not provide evidence for direct discursive interference, but rather for references to familiar ideas of huote, which have also manifested themselves in proverbs. The various concretisations of the inner huote ultimately thematise facets of the self.
