<p>In historical linguistics as well as in medieval studies, cases of linguistic ambiguity occasionally arise which, for various reasons within the respective discipline, lead to corresponding discussions regarding the appropriate interpretation of the respective example. Beginning with the state of the art on linguistic ambiguity and on ambiguity of relational adjectives, the following article will focus on the question of the ambiguity of adjectives in Old High German, which are initially ambiguous for formal reasons with regard to a&#xa0;relational and qualitative reading. The discussion of examples is based on a&#xa0;selection from corpus Referenzkorpus Old High German (ReA) in the methodological framework of the research project Relational Adjectives in the History of German (RAHiG, supported by FWF, P32415). Based on the linguistic identification of ambiguous examples, this article will use literary methodology to work out different types of ambiguity in relational adjectives and discuss the role of linguistic vs. extra-linguistic knowledge in order to identify different sorts of ambiguity in linguistic semantics.</p>
