Population Characteristics and Stock Status of Lutjanus quinquelineatus in Coromandel Coast, Southeast India
摘要
The five-lined snapper, Lutjanus quinquelineatus (Bloch, 1790), is a commercially important species harvested from trawl and hook-and-line fisheries along the Nagapattinam coast, India. Despite its economic significance, insufficient species-specific data from Indian waters constrain the development of effective fisheries management strategies. This study analyzed 1,686 specimens collected from the Nagapattinam coast (southeastern Bay of Bengal) between October 2022 and September 2023 to estimate growth and mortality parameters. Using the von Bertalanffy growth function, the asymptotic length (L∞) was determined to be 28.24 cm, with a growth coefficient (K) of 0.60 y⁻¹, indicating a lifespan of approximately 5 years. Mortality estimates included natural mortality (M) at 1.30, total mortality (Z) at 2.61, and fishing mortality (F) at 1.31, with an exploitation rate (E) of 0.50. These findings provide crucial insights into the growth and mortality dynamics of L. quinquelineatus and support the development of sustainable fishery management policies along the southeast coast of India, including the implementation of minimum size limits, gear/mesh size regulations, seasonal closures during peak recruitment periods, and effort control measures to reduce juvenile exploitation and maintain sustainable stock levels.
