A Study on the Risk-Spreading Reproductive Strategy in Landlocked Populations of Anadromous Tropical Shad, Tenualosa Ilisha (Hamilton, 1822), from Ukai Reservoir, in Comparison to their Anadromous Counterparts of Narmada Estuary, India

This study investigated the reproductive traits of female Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) in both landlocked populations in Ukai reservoir, Gujarat, India (UR) and anadromous populations in Narmada estuary, Gujarat, India- (NME). We hypothesized that the distinct ecological conditions would influence reproductive strategies. Our findings revealed that landlocked Hilsa shad exhibited protracted spawning season compared to a distinct, short spawning season. in anadromous counterparts. Additionally, the ovarian histology revealed that anadromous Hilsa shad demonstrated synchronous oocyte development, indicative of a total spawning strategy, with peak mean GSI values ranging from 0.2% to 11.6%. In contrast, reservoir populations exhibited asynchronous development, suggesting a batch spawning strategy (multiple spawner) with comparatively lower GSI values. This shift towards batch spawning in the landlocked population can be interpreted as a risk-spreading reproductive strategy, ensuring reproductive success across a wider temporal window in the relatively stable reservoir environment. These differences were further supported by comparisons of oocyte diameter frequency distributions and gonadosomatic indices. These results highlight the adaptability of female Hilsa shad to different habitat conditions. Understanding these differences is crucial for effective conservation and management of this commercially important species.
