Pole-held Cast Net Fisheries in Batanes Province, Philippines

Cast nets represent one of the oldest fishing gears globally, yet regional variations remain poorly documented, particularly in areas where traditional subsistence systems persist. In Batanes Province, northern Philippines, the Ivatan people continue to employ pole-held cast nets, locally known as nanaúy/nanawuy, a culturally unique gear whose origin, technical design, and role in local food systems have never been formally described. This study provides the first systematic documentation and fisheries assessment of pole-held cast nets in Batanes. We characterized gear design, operational practices, and catch composition across five municipalities using household surveys, gear census, and structured catch-and-effort monitoring. We identified 472 active fishers (19.27% of registered small-scale fishers) operating two variants of the pole-held cast nets, the mayripid and ipayvuya, reflecting deeply embedded ecological knowledge and intergenerational transfer of fishing skills. Field monitoring recorded 14 reef-associated species and demonstrated gear performance through average catch per trip of 3.66 kg (mayripid) and 4.18 kg (ipayvuya), corresponding CPUE values of 1.53 and 1.91 kg/h. These metrics support the role of pole-held cast nets as an efficient yet low-extraction subsistence gear aligned with Ivatan cultural norms of conservative harvests. Fishing remained primarily subsistence-based, with average monthly production during the four-month observation period reaching 134.83 ± 18.04 kg for mayripid and 119.30 ± 22.33 kg for ipayvuya, underscoring its importance to household nutrition in an isolated province setting. This study advances the documentation of indigenous fishing technologies by establishing a baseline for gear characteristics, effort, and productivity. It contributes critical evidence for integrating subsistence fisheries into local management and food security planning.
