Assessment of Human Health Risks Associated with the Consumption of Wild and Cultivated Mytilus Galloprovincialis from the Southwestern Mediterranean Sea

This study aimed to assess the concentrations of aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn) in Mytilus galloprovincialis specimens collected along the Algiers coastline. Samples were obtained from seven locations, including two shellfish farming areas. For each specimen, morphometric parameters (length, width, and thickness) were measured, and the trace elements (TEs) content in soft tissues were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations of TEs (µg/g dry weight) presented the following decreasing order of abundance: Al (388.17 ± 467.74) > Fe (346.73 ± 240.11) > Zn (181.94 ± 19.69) > As (13.12 ± 4.97) > Mn (7.32 ± 2.36) > Cu (5.11 ± 1.10) > Cr (2.54 ± 1.60) > Pb (2.17 ± 1.65) > V (2.01 ± 1.16) > Ni (1.87 ± 0.96) > Mo (1.22 ± 0.50) > Co (1.03 ± 0.39) > Cd (0.89 ± 0.81). According to the Trace Element Pollution Index, all sampling stations, except Algiers Harbor and Berrard farm, exhibited high contamination level. The Trace Element Spatial Variation Index ranged from 0.16 to 11.06, delineating three distinct categories: Class I (Zn, Cu, As, Mn, and Mo); Class II (Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, V, Pb, and Cd); and Class III (Al). The combined exposure of all analyzed TEs indicated a potential non-carcinogenic risk (Hazard Index = 20.10). Arsenic was identified as the critical element limiting the safe consumption of M. galloprovincialis, restricting its daily intake to approximately 2 g/day.
