Assessment of Gillnet Selectivity Using the SELECT Method for Sawtooth Barracuda (Sphyraena putnamae) in the Chabahar Fishing Zone, Oman Sea

This study, conducted in the Chabahar region of the Oman Sea during the winter and summer of 2022, assessed the selectivity of gillnets used for fishing Sphyraena putnamae. The objective was to determine optimal net lengths and standard mesh sizes to enhance fishing efficiency while ensuring sustainability. Sampling occurred in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, employing fiberglass boats and multi-filament gillnets with four mesh sizes: 64, 83, 95, and 110 mm. A total of 2,217 specimens of S. putnamae were captured, with biometric measurements taken onshore for accuracy. Four selectivity models—normal location, normal scale, gamma, and log-normal—were evaluated. The normal location model proved most effective, showing the lowest standard deviation of 388.03. Optimal lengths for the respective mesh sizes were determined to be 38 cm for 64 mm, 47 cm for 83 mm, 55 cm for 95 mm, and 61.5 cm for 110 mm. Results indicated that the highest average lengths of S. putnamae were recorded with the 110 mm mesh (66 cm) in summer, while the lowest were from the 64 mm mesh (41 cm). Selectivity coefficients for the mesh sizes ranged from 0.168 to 0.178, revealing varying effectiveness in targeting desired fish sizes. Based on selectivity curves, minimum standard mesh sizes of 11.2 mm and 10.34 mm were recommended for sustainable practices. These findings underscore the importance of selecting appropriate mesh sizes to improve selectivity, promote sustainable fishing, and conserve fish stocks and marine ecosystems in the Chabahar region, providing valuable insights for fisheries management.
