Functional Properties and Applications of Spirulina (Cyanophyceae) to Animal Health Benefits: A Systemic Review
摘要
Spirulina (SP) is a helical-structured cyanobacterium widely known for its exceptional nutritional composition. It contains high amounts of essential nutrients, including proteins, minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids, notably omega-3 and omega-6. Furthermore, researchers have found that a significant portion of the bioactive compounds in SP, including phenols, phycocyanin pigments, and polysaccharides, perform various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Therefore, SP has been incorporated into diverse dietary supplements, functional foods, and therapeutic dishes. Recent studies have also investigated its possible application as a beneficial feed supplement in animal nutrition. SP shows potential as a feed source for a wide range of farm animals, including bees, chickens, quail, cattle, rabbits, and fish. Its usage in animal feed enhances animal growth and health and improves the quality of animal-derived products. This review highlights the nutritional abundance of SP and its increasing significance in animal feed formulations, accentuating its potential as a sustainable and highly beneficial dietary supplement for animal nutrition. Future research should extensively investigate the potential of SP in disease prevention, medicinal uses, and innovative food items to broaden its practical application.
