Exploring Chemical Compounds Diversity and Potential Applications of Four Sargassum Species from the South Coast of Yogyakarta, Indonesia: Implications for Blue Economy and Sustainability

Sargassum spp. are brown seaweeds. The species grow abundantly and diversely in the Indonesian coastal waters. Different species have different chemical compounds, and thus in-depth research is needed to reveal the potential chemical compounds of different Sargassum species. This study aimed to analyze the proximate composition, minerals, and vitamins of four Sargassum species, namely S. aquifolium, S. duplicatum, S. polycystum, and S. yinggehaiense, from the south coast of Yogyakarta. Proximate analysis was performed utilizing the AOAC method, while vitamin and mineral levels were assessed by spectrophotometry. The study found a significant variation in the potential component concentrations of S. aquifolium, S. duplicatum, S. polycystum, and S. yinggehaiense, except vitamin C levels. S. aquifolium had the most ash (13.48 ± 0.02%), fat (0.85 ± 0.03%), and crude fiber (8.36 ± 0.28%), while S. duplicatum had the most carbohydrates (48.40 ± 0.15%), energy (242.18 ± 0.44 cal/100 g), vitamin C (27.92 ± 2.63%), iodine (76.74 ± 5.71 ppm), and calcium (3.00 ± 0.01%). S. polycystum demonstrated the highest moisture content (27.84 ± 0.00%) and protein levels (13.35 ± 0.11%), while S. yinggehaiense showed relatively high energy content compared to S. aquifolium and S. polycystum. Information on the variation in potential component composition of these four Sargassum species provides an important database for optimizing Sargassum utilization through species-specific compound selection, enabling more targeted applications while minimizing exploitation of certain Sargassum species. Sargassum represents a significant opportunity for advancing the blue economy, given its varied chemical compounds and extensive applications in the food, energy, and health sectors. Valorization is essential for the sustainable use of resources, fosters blue economy initiatives, and contributes to economic development in coastal areas. To fully harness the potential of Sargassum, it is essential to establish robust policies, guarantee secure processing techniques, and embrace innovative approaches. Therefore, Sargassum plays a vital role in promoting a strong and sustainable blue economy framework.
