Unveiling the Health and Growth Patterns of 11 Goatfish Species (Family: Mullidae) along the Coast of Gulf of Mannar: Evidence From Length-Weight Relationship and Relative Condition Factor Analysis

The study evaluated the length-weight relationship (LWR) and relative condition factor (Kn) for 11 commercially important goatfish species (Mullidae) collected from two significant landing centres (Pamban fish landing centre and Thoothukudi fishing harbour) located in the Gulf of Mannar (GoM), Southeast coast of India. A total of 2060 specimens were collected through monthly sampling between April 2024 and March 2025 with commercially operated bottom-set gill nets and bottom trawl nets. Additionally, this study presents a new maximum length (Lmax) for Upeneus margarathae (20 cm). Among the 11 species analysed the growth coefficient (b) values attained for the 11 species ranged from minimum of 2.89 for Upeneus margarathae to maximum of 3.2178 for Upeneus vittatus. The coefficient of determination (r2) values ranged between (0.9014) for Parupeneus indicus and (0.9959) for Upeneus sundaicus. Furthermore, all species exhibited a Kn value of 1, except for Upeneus taeniopterus, which had a slightly lower value of 0.9996, indicating that environmental conditions were generally suitable for fish growth. These findings provide valuable insights for fisheries management, population health assessment, and conservation planning for these economically important species in the marine ecosystem.
