Space Launches and Their Possible Impact on the Deterioration of the Indian River Lagoon Marine Ecosystem in Florida?

As global space industry activities accelerate, concerns are growing over the environmental footprint of rocket launches, particularly their impact on coastal and marine ecosystems. Rocket emissions and spaceport operations release a complex mix of pollutants, including acidifying gases, particulate matter, trace metals, and synthetic debris, that can contaminate atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic environments. Despite these known pollutant pathways, the ecological consequences of space launches remain poorly understood, especially in vulnerable estuarine systems. This study presents one of the first systematic syntheses of space launch–related debris pollution and its potential ecological impacts, with a focus on Florida’s Indian River Lagoon (IRL), a biodiversity hotspot located adjacent to multiple active launch sites. To guide this investigation, three research questions were posed: (1) What types of Debris Pollutants from Space Launches have been documented? (2) What are their Ecological Consequences with these pollutants? and (3) Are there Observable Stressor Patterns in the Indian River Lagoon that correlate with Space Launch Activities? A systematic literature review was conducted using keyword refinement, database filtering, and a PRISMA-based selection process. Findings indicate that space launches produce a wide range of pollutants, including mercury, aluminum, lithium, vanadium, hydrochloric acid, and black carbon, with documented effects such as acidification, chemical contamination, and physiological stress in marine organisms. In the IRL, elevated trace metal levels and episodic acidification events have been temporally linked to launch events, though evidence remains limited. These results support two of the three proposed hypotheses, highlighting the need for further empirical studies to confirm pollutant-deposition patterns and ecological correlations. The review underscores the importance of integrating marine environmental considerations into space industry planning and regulation to prevent cumulative degradation of estuarine ecosystems. As launch activities intensify globally, proactive monitoring and mitigation strategies will be critical to aligning space exploration with coastal sustainability goals..
