Pharmacognostical and Anatomical Insights into Sargassum polycystum: A Marine Brown Algae with Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Potential

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of Sargassum polycystum, a marine brown alga (Phaeophyceae) from the Sargassaceae family, known for its distinct morphology comprising axis, twigs, leaves and pneumatocysts. Predominantly found in tropical and subtropical shallow waters, S. polycystum is a floating macroalga rich in bioactive compounds such as vitamins, carotenoids, dietary fibres, proteins and essential minerals. It exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor, fibrinolytic, anticoagulant and antiviral effects. This research documents the pharmacognostical and macro microscopical characteristics of the S. polycystum thallus using standard methods of collection, preservation, sectioning, staining, and photomicrography of male receptacles and leaves. Anatomical studies revealed root-like structures featuring a significant number of branched stone cells, indicating unique adaptations. Leaf sections were also examined microscopically to identify key anatomical features. Additionally, molecular docking studies identified potential antidiabetic targets, including 5’-AMP-activated protein kinase subunit beta-1 (Q9Y478) and Multidrug and toxin extrusion protein 1 (Q96FL8). Overall, this research highlights the pharmaceutical and medicinal potential of S. polycystum.
