摘要

The annual reproductive cycle of temnopleurid echinoid: Salmacis bicolor on the Chennai coast, south-east coast of India, was investigated. By understanding the reproductive patterns, gonad development and spawning cycles, the study aimed to promote sustainable management and conservation of Salmacis bicolor populations in the region. The monthly variations in the reproductive cycle of male and female sea urchins wereobserved using gonadosomatic index (GSI). Additionally, the histological examination of the developmental stages of the gonads in the roe of both male and female sea urchins was carried out using an Upright Phase Contrast Microscope. In male sea urchins, GSI increased gradually during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, from May (6.12 ± 0.34%) to August (8.47 ± 0.89%) respectively. Similar patterns were observed in female sea urchins from June (5.1 ± 0.28%) to October (9.56 ± 0.34%). Histological examination revealed that sperm cysts were large in August (65.2 ± 0.4 µm—75.34 ± 0.78 µm), and oocytes (72. 23 ± 0.32 µm—80.16 ± 0.43 µm) in October. The female sea urchin had its spawning peak during the north-eastern monsoon season (rainy season), in contrast to the male was the spawning peak was observed in spring and autumn (dry season).
