Age and Length at Maturity of Pelagic Thresher (Alopias pelagicus) in the Mexican Pacific

Information about reproductive parameters, such as age and length at which half the population matures (A50 and L50) of the pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus) in the Mexican Pacific, is scarce. To fill this knowledge void, we used maturity data collected from 2015 females and 2030 males captured by pelagic longliners in the Mexican Pacific during 2013–2020. The precaudal length (PCL) for combined sexes ranged from 71 to 198 cm. The age was obtained through the inverse von Bertalanffy function using the growth parameters. The age and length at which half of the population reaches sexual maturity (A50, L50, respectively) was estimated using a Bayesian approach fitting three sigmoid models (logistic, Gompertz, and Weibull) to binomial maturity data. Based on the Watanabe–Akaike information criterion for model selection, the logistic model for each sex was selected as the best model with the estimated parameters being: For males, L50 was 130.05 cm precaudal length (PCL) (95% credible interval [CI95%]: 129.11–130.94) and the steepness (ϕ) was 3.32 (CI95%: 2.90–3.79). For females, L50 was 139.03 cm PCL (CI95%: 137.96–140.05) and ϕ was 7.70 (CI95%: 7.02–8.44). The A50 for females was 9.46 years (CI95%: 9.12–9.75), and for males, 6.82 years (CI95%: 6.66–7.09). The present study provides biological information on the pelagic thresher, which can be valuable for demographic analyses and much-needed stock assessment.
