<p>The present study was conducted to assess the biology and stock status of <i>Nemipterus japonicus</i> along the Cuddalore coast of Tamil Nadu. <i>N. japonicus</i> was one of the dominant species landed throughout the year in this region. Key biological findings revealed that the species exhibits negative allometric growth, with the length at first maturity calculated at 15.3&#xa0;cm. The peak spawning season occurred in November and January, as indicated by high Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) values of 4.54 and 5.17, respectively. The fecundity ranged from 22,709 to 267,365 eggs, suggesting high reproductive potential. The gut content analysis indicated that the species predominantly feeds on small fishes and crustaceans. The growth parameters estimated using the von Bertalanffy Growth Equation showed an asymptotic length (L<sub>∞</sub>) of 30.45&#xa0;cm and a growth coefficient (K) of 0.62. The exploitation ratio (E = 0.39) was found to be below the maximum exploitation level (E<sub>max</sub> = 0.49), indicating that the stock is slightly less exploited. Management measures needs to be evolved to achieve optimal catch while ensuring the sustainability of the stock.</p>
