Environmental and socioeconomic implications of ecosystem services in Moroccan Lagoons: a review
摘要
Morocco has five lagoons extending from the north to the south (the Nador Lagoon, the Moulay Bousselham Lagoon, the Oualidia-Sidi Moussa Lagoon complex, and the Khnifiss Lagoon). These lagoons provide many services and goods to the local population, especially aquaculture, fishing, and agricultural activities. In this paper, we define and analyze the ecosystem services and goods these lagoons provide using Ma’s conceptual framework. Our analysis highlights the common services and goods these ecosystems provide and the main pressures from human activities, suggesting the urgent need to develop strategies and policies that holistically incorporate all services and goods to support sustainable socio-economic and environmental growth. The lagoons contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (life below water) and SDG 13 (climate action), though they face gaps in habitat health monitoring and in biogeochemical cycling research. This points to the necessity of adopting these goals in management projects and strategies to prevent future widespread pollution, poverty, job loss, and potential conflicts of interest. Besides, the sustainable use and management of coastal lagoons require implimenting multi-approach solutions that engage the local community, promote green practices, and ensure effective monitoring to maintain a delicate balance among the three pillars of sustainability.
