Valorization of date palm waste through co-composting with poultry manure: a sustainable amendment for barley cultivation

Annually, the oasis regions of Tunisia produce a significant amount of biomass by maintaining palm groves, which lead to environmental issues caused by excess waste accumulation of date palm waste. Furthermore, the intensification of the agricultural system in these regions, without organic matter restitution, has resulted in soil degradation. In this study, poultry manure and date palm waste from the Chnenni oasis in southern Tunisia were co-composted. Based on several biometric characteristics associated with the vegetative development of barley plants, the agronomic potential of the produced compost (PC) was evaluated. In comparison to commercial compost (CC), the results indicated that PC was the most successful alternative for plant development (45.76 cm height), root elongation (19.27 cm), plant mass (3.5 g), and root weight (0.1 g). According to the findings, oasis farmers can use produced compost from date palm waste as an alternative to traditional fertilizers.
