Integrating remote sensing and GIS for fire regime analysis in the Wilaya of Tlemcen, Algeria: discrepancies between satellite-derived and official fire data

This study develops a high-resolution burn area (BA) database for the Wilaya of Tlemcen, Algeria, covering the period 1992–2020. Using Landsat satellite imagery and geographic information systems (GIS), the study maps fire occurrence, size, and distribution, revealing that official records from Algeria’s General Directorate of Forests (DGF) underestimated burned areas by 45–60% compared to satellite-derived data. The BA-Tlemcen database addresses these gaps by providing spatially explicit, 30-m resolution maps, enabling precise tracking of fire perimeters and recurrence patterns—especially in ecologically sensitive and fragmented Mediterranean landscapes. The research links fire activity to land cover changes, climate factors, and human influences, demonstrating that 53.4% of the total burned area occurred in the 2010s, with four extreme years (1994, 2004, 2014, 2015) each exceeding 12.0% of the cumulative burned area and therefore defined here as “extreme years”. Validation against global products (MCD64A1, FireCCI51, EFFIS) confirmed the database’s superior accuracy, with lower omission errors, improved overall accuracy, and a Dice coefficient of 0.39 compared to 0.33–0.40 for global datasets. The findings support the integration of remote sensing into national fire monitoring systems and offer a replicable methodology for Mediterranean regions.
