Eco-friendly feed strategies in bivalve aquaculture: impact of kombucha tea on antioxidant and immune responses in carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus)

Kombucha tea, a traditional fermented beverage rich in polyphenols, organic acids, and beneficial microorganisms, offers multiple health-promoting properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and probiotic effects. This study assessed the potential of kombucha as a natural feed additive to improve the physiological robustness and disease resistance of carpet shell clams (Ruditapes decussatus) under bacterial challenge with Vibrio alginolyticus. Clams receiving kombucha supplementation exhibited increased antioxidant enzyme activities (glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) and reduced lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde levels), compared to the control group. Immune parameters, such as phenoloxidase and lectin activity, were significantly elevated, while lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase activity decreased. Histological analysis revealed that kombucha supplementation protected clam tissues from infection-induced damage, maintaining structural integrity. These findings suggest that kombucha tea is a promising eco-friendly and sustainable dietary supplement that can improve the antioxidant status, immune function, and disease resistance of bivalves, contributing to more resilient and environmentally responsible aquaculture practices.
