Application of an eco-friendly biostimulant for enhancing growth, physiological status and total phenolics of hydroponically grown Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds plants

Seaweeds are used as biostimulants in the production of many crops, while their application under hydroponic conditions is limited. In the present work, plant growth, biomass production, physiological status and total phenolic and flavonoid contents of hydroponically grown horsemint (Mentha longifolia L. Huds) plants were investigated for the first time when the algal extract of Ulva intestinalis at 10% was foliar sprayed and/or injected in the hydroponic solution. It has been shown that when the U. intestinalis algal extract was applied by both foliar spray and injection into the nutrient solution, a significant increase in the plant height and the number of leaves and shoots was noted (by 22.5%, 44.85%, and 55.56%, respectively). Similarly, the root length and volume were increased significantly (by 52.94% and 30.50%, respectively), as well as the biomass production of shoots and roots (by 11.05% and 10.50%, respectively). Moreover, a significant enhancement (+ 55.60%) of the total chlorophyll level was noticed while this treatment has induced the highest and significantly total soluble sugar content (3.21 mg·g-1 FW) in comparison to the control (0.42 mg·g-1 FW). Furthermore, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of plants were increased significantly by 77.66% and 20.90%, respectively. Thus, it could be concluded that on one hand, M. longifolia is a successfully cultivated species under hydroponic conditions and on the other hand, the production of this plant is improved by using the algal extract of U. intestinalis as a biostimulant when it was cultivated in hydroponics.
