Assessment of economic loss due to occupational heat stress in Egypt

Climate change and associated heat stress may adversely affect labor productivity due to diminished physical work capacity and mental ability and increased risk of accidents. This paper intends to assess the impacts of heat stress on labor productivity in Alexandria, Egypt, over the period 2000–2020 and under climate change scenarios. The results revealed that due to the increasing temperature in Alexandria over the study period, about 75% of the annual working days were lost in the hot summer season. The total economic loss due to heat stress during 2000–2020 was estimated to be USD 4.5 billion. By the year 2050, the number of hot days is expected to increase, compared to the reference period, by about 40% and 55% under the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, respectively. Such an increase in hot days under climate change scenarios, in addition to growing labor forces and economic growth, would augment future economic loss.
