Enhancing compatibility in PET/PMMA blends: the role of esterification and transesterification in thermal and morphological properties—a literature review

This research explores the mechanisms of interaction between polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) within polymer blends, focusing on overcoming the challenges associated with their natural incompatibility. This study investigates the formation of PET/PMMA blends, highlighting the importance of esterification and transesterification reactions in facilitating the integration of these distinct polymers. A comprehensive analysis of the blends’ thermal, chemical, and morphological properties was performed using state-of-the-art analytical methods. The findings reveal a notable improvement in the thermal stability of PMMA when combined with the PET matrix. This enhancement is attributed to the controlled degradation of monomers during blending, which allows for precise adjustment of the material's thermal behavior. These results offer valuable insights into the relationship between PET and PMMA, contributing to the advancement of novel polymer blends tailored for a wide range of industrial uses.
