First assessment of healthcare solid waste management in public healthcare facilities: a case study of the Safi Region, Morocco

Effective healthcare waste management is crucial Due to the specific nature of the materials and products used in activities and the presence of different pathogens in waste. These necessitate effective waste management procedures to reduce potential health and environmental risks. The primary objective of this study is to assess the quantity and composition of healthcare waste and evaluate waste management practices in public healthcare facilities of the region of Safi, Morocco. Healthcare waste samples were monitored monthly over a seven-year period (2017–2023) from the local Mohammed V hospital and 42 healthcare centers, the analysis focused on waste generation, composition, and processing. The annual waste generation rate at the hospital ranged from 0.34 to 0.41 kg/bed-day while at the healthcare centers, the health centers it ranged from 0.018 to 0.08 kg/patient-day. The average generation rates for infectious waste, anatomic waste, and sharp waste were 34%, 44%, 5.51% respectively. The composition of healthcare waste was 89% domestic waste and 11% hazardous waste. However, the best practices for healthcare waste management recommended by the national health policy are not being followed in healthcare centers. Lack of sufficient management resources can impair the quality of health prevention and deterioration of environmental health.
