<p>In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in finding solutions for the disposal of municipal solid waste. Waste management has become a major challenge for many African countries, struggling with inadequate funding, technological limitations, political conflicts, and difficult economic conditions. Despite these challenges, some African nations have achieved notable successes, with Algeria emerging as a potential model for others. Algeria’s experience in waste management has demonstrated substantial potential, which other African countries could learn from. However, significant obstacles remain in achieving the desired results. While Algeria has made progress, many regions continue to face waste management crises, particularly in Tlemcen province in the northwest of Algeria. Some municipalities have experienced deteriorating environmental conditions not seen in previous years, underscoring ongoing challenges. To identify gaps and challenges in waste management across the country, a comprehensive survey was conducted involving 1200 participants from various regions of Algeria. The survey aimed to pinpoint persistent challenges and assess public awareness of waste management efforts. It also generated several proposals for improving the country’s environmental situation. The survey revealed that Algeria is among the most committed countries in Africa regarding waste disposal. However, it also showed that Algeria is still far from reaching its “zero waste” goal owing to significant mismanagement in some waste collection and disposal institutions. Encouragingly, the survey highlighted high levels of awareness and interest among Algerians, reflecting a strong desire to contribute to improving the country’s environmental conditions.</p>
