Development of functionalized nano quantum Dots using banana Peel extract: evaluation on predominant cell lines
摘要
This study demonstrates the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of functionalized quantum dots (QDs) derived using a green approach with banana peel extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The QDs were prepared using cadmium nitrate and zinc acetate under controlled conditions, producing nanoparticles with an average size of 5.1 ± 0.8 nm (TEM) and a hydrodynamic diameter of 6.5 ± 0.6 nm (DLS) with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.19, indicating uniformity. Functionalization with biomolecules from the extract improved stability, as reflected by a zeta potential of -18.2 mV. Optical characterization revealed high photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 45% and a fluorescence emission peak at 520 nm, suitable for bioimaging. Drug loading studies with curcumin as a model drug showed a loading efficiency of 82.3 ± 3.1%, and release kinetics indicated a sustained release pattern, releasing 85.2 ± 2.3% of the drug over 48 hours. The synthesized QDs were evaluated on *MCF-7 (human breast cancer) and HeLa (human cervical cancer) cell lines.” Cytotoxicity and cellular uptake studies done on MCF-7 and HeLa cell lines confirmed biocompatibility at lower concentrations (cell viability > 80% at ≤ 25 µg/mL) and effective internalization (fluorescence intensity plateauing at 370 ± 12 AU in MCF-7 and 420 ± 14 AU in HeLa after 12 h).These findings underscore the potential of the functionalized quantum dots as a robust platform for drug delivery and bioimaging, offering eco-friendly synthesis, enhanced stability, and promising biomedical efficacy. .
