Dew Water Production Evaluation Using a Mini Portable Dew Water Harvesting Unit Operated Under the Thermoelectric Cooling (TEC) Varied Voltages in Malaysia

Cooling down surfaces to dew point temperature is crucial to produce dew water on object surfaces. In this research, a mini portable dew water harvesting (MPDWH) was designed, fabricated, and operated by employing a thermoelectric cooling (TEC) unit and it was later tested with varied voltages (6 V and 2 V) to assess the condensate air and dew water harvesting on the TEC heat sink surfaces under the Malaysian outdoor climate condition. The TEC unit consisted of a Peltier module (12 V), a direct current (DC) fan, and two aluminum heat sinks with different features—one was joined on the cold side of the Peltier module while the other was used to dissipate heat from the hot side of the module. The results showed that the heat sink surface of the TEC unit operated under 12 V attained average temperatures between 3.23 and 4.69 °C than the corresponding average dew point temperatures, producing a lower amount of dew water (between 31.20 and 40.60 ml). In comparison, the heat sink surfaces of the TEC unit performed under 6 V achieved average temperatures between 6.30 and 8 °C that were nearer to the average dew point temperatures, generating between 41 and 50 ml dew water. Although further quality analysis of the produced dew water denoted its compliance with the WHO and Malaysian class I drinking water standards, the harvested dew water can be evaluated as utility water due to lack of the required minerals and seems effective to be used for drip agricultural irrigation purposes and watering the plants and flowers. Thus, MPDWH has the potential to supply dew from the air in villages encountering water shortages.
