Utilizing Pistachio Hull Tannin for Nickel Removal in Plating Industry Wastewater

Iran’s plating industry is a major contributor to environmental pollution. The wastewater from this industry contains hazardous compounds, particularly chromium and nickel, which are often discharged untreated into the environment, especially into water bodies. Prolonged exposure to nickel, a prevalent heavy metal in this sector, can cause severe health risks, including organ damage and hypersensitivity. This study explores the potential of tannin extracted from fresh pistachio hulls as a solution for removing nickel from plating industry wastewater. The research examines various factors, including pH levels, tannin dosage, contact duration, and initial nickel concentration, to shed light on the efficacy of this method. Preliminary findings suggest promising results, with optimal removal efficiency achieved at pH 10, a contact time of 20 min, and a tannin dose of 3 mg/L. Upon optimistic condition, the higher removal efficiency of nickel (II) within the ranges of 95 to 98% under both of synthetic and real plating industry wastewater was achieved. This study highlights the cost-effectiveness and availability of tannin powder as a viable solution for removing nickel from plating industry wastewater. The results provide valuable insights into sustainable approaches for managing wastewater, making them worthy of publication consideration.
