Sustainable management of oil-contaminated soils in geotechnical and environmental applications: a state-of-the-art review

This review evaluates the feasibility of reusing oil-contaminated soils in geotechnical and construction applications. Analysis of the contamination life cycle reveals that while oil exposure typically degrades soil permeability, shear strength, and structural integrity, targeted treatment and modification techniques can restore acceptable engineering performance. Consequently, treated soils can be safely repurposed for low-risk applications, including embankment fill, road sub-bases, and landscaping. The study contributes an integrated management framework that aligns environmental safety protocols with geotechnical performance standards, alongside a comprehensive synthesis of recent research studies and identification of critical knowledge gaps. Key practical implications include the transformation of contaminated soils from environmental liabilities into sustainable construction resources, supported by eco-efficient management strategies that advance circular economy principles in geotechnical practice. Persistent challenges in long-term stability assessment, regulatory compliance, and standardized risk evaluation are highlighted to guide future research studies.
