Numerical investigation of SFRM-reinforced arch brick barrels with different backfills under earthquake

Arch brick barrel structures under seismic dynamic loading conditions is consider one of most complex engineering challenge. A nonlinear finite element methodology using Abaqus 6.19 was implemented to analyse the behaviour of arch brick barrels under Koyna earthquake ground acceleration, followed by post- static loading. Three different backfill materials (clay, sand, and limestone) for both with and without Steel Fibre Reinforced Mortar (SFRM) layer reinforcement were studied in the current research. The detailed finite element modelling validated against recent experimental work, revealed insightful perspectives on the structural response. Numerical results demonstrated a significant performance enhancement of arch brick barrel structures with SFRM layer, with limestone backfill showing the greatest stiffness resistance (an improvement of 23%), in contrast to the more modest gains in clay (14.7%) and sand (17.5%) backfills.
