Investigating mode preferences in E-mobility for sustainable transportation: a case study of Hyderabad, India

The growing concerns over energy security, rising fuel costs, and environmental pollution from fossil-fuel-based transportation have accelerated the global shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). However, in developing economies like India, several barriers—including inadequate charging infrastructure, high upfront costs, range anxiety, and low consumer awareness—continue to hinder widespread EV adoption. This study presents a case analysis of Hyderabad, India, investigating public perceptions and behavioral drivers influencing EV adoption. A structured survey of 400 respondents was conducted, and multinomial logistic regression was used to develop two models: one analyzing transport mode choice based on socio-demographic factors, trip purposes, and travel distances; and another assessing EV ownership intent by considering attitudinal variables and infrastructure access. The findings reveal that fuel cost savings, environmental consciousness, daily travel range, and proximity to charging stations are statistically significant predictors of both mode choice and willingness to adopt EVs. Notably, respondents with higher environmental awareness and access to charging infrastructure were 1.8 times more likely to consider purchasing an EV. These insights offer practical implications for region-specific policy interventions and infrastructure planning aimed at accelerating the transition toward sustainable and inclusive electric mobility.
