摘要

Cracking problems and ground movement in slope systems are encountered on both slopes of recent construction and those that have been in use for many years. Instability in slopes occurs when stresses exceed the slope material's shear strength. Excessive overburden pressure due to external loads, or increased pore water, might cause the stress to be excessive. Other factors that decrease soil strength for slope instability are poor soil condition, weathering, slope geometry, soil stratification, and discontinuities in the rock body. This study attempts to understand the stability conditions of a slope in Chwit, Lebanon through an extensive geotechnical investigation. The influence of several parameters along the failed portion were discussed and evaluated accordingly in terms of safety factor. For instance, FS has increased from 1.15 to 1.62 upon decreasing the inclination whereas the latter has decreased to 1.1 upon increasing the surcharge load. Besides, different corrective and remedial measures for the stabilization of the slope were investigated. The reinforcement using a retaining wall and piles revealed the highest safety factor (FS = 1.48). Recommendations for local authorities have been stated in order to avoid the severity of such phenomena in the future.
