Sustainable renewable energy projects in the eastern province in KSA: feasibility analysis

The Eastern Province that is ranked second in highest energy consumption in the kingdom, offers great potential for establishing renewable energy-based power plants due to the abundance of sun, wind and waste sources. However, such huge investments require vigilant feasibility studies that address the three aspects of energy, environment and economy; so that decision makers can establish the most efficient projects. For this reason, the simulation of two power plants of (1000 kW) and (10,000 kW) capacity, driven by four renewable energy sources 1) photovoltaic 2) wind turbine 3) solar thermal and 4) biomass has been conducted in RetScreen software. The analysis, based on genuine data parameters, has shown that wind turbines-based power plants constitute good investments in the area due to their potential rate of energy production, high amounts of displaced greenhouse gases and economic viability. While biomass and solar thermal can contribute enormously to energy generation and reduced emissions, the investments in these two technologies are not financially viable.
