Assessing the operational features of bus rapid transit at innovative roundabouts: an integrated BWM-MABAC method

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and unconventional intersections demonstrate their capacity to enhance traffic operations and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the operational performance of a proposed roundabout scheme, an innovative throughabout scheme, under four scenarios: signalized throughabout providing priority to BRT, signalized throughabout without providing priority to BRT, unsignalized throughabout with priority for BRT, and unsignalized throughabout without priority for BRT. The evaluation metrics used to compare the proposed alternatives included travel time, travel speed, average delay, queue length, and number of stops. The weights of the different evaluation metrics were determined using the best–worst method, then the best alternative was chosen based on Multi-Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison (MABAC). The results of the evaluation indicated that the signalized throughabout scheme with no priority for BRT demonstrated the best operational performance for improving traffic flow. Additionally, the study found that both macroscopic and microscopic simulation can be useful in helping practitioners select the most appropriate scenario for a given set of competing objectives.
