Sustainability-based knowledge mapping of building information modelling (SB-BIM) in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) – current status and future prospects

As environmental concerns grow, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is increasingly embraced in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. This study offers a novel perspective on how BIM can advance sustainability by mapping current research trends, identifying gaps, and proposing future directions. A scientometric analysis of 6,010 articles was conducted using CiteSpace (5.8.R3) to trace the field’s evolution. Results showed a sharp rise in BIM-related publications since 1983, yet only 14% specifically addresses sustainability, revealing a significant gap. While terms like “energy” are becoming more common, broader sustainability themes remain underrepresented. The analysis highlights emerging areas such as the circular economy and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, the full potential of BIM to drive sustainability is not yet realized. The review underscores a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly from environmental and energy sciences. It also finds that highly cited BIM papers often neglect sustainability concerns. Despite some progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in Industry and Climate Action, further collaborative and cross-disciplinary research is essential. The study emphasizes the importance of leveraging emerging technologies, including AI, Augmented Reality (AR), and Virtual Reality (VR), to improve sustainability outcomes. It also calls for improved standardization, open data platforms, and greater focus on energy management and Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). By bridging current gaps, BIM can more effectively support sustainability goals in the AEC sector. This alignment is essential for driving long-term technical, environmental, social, and economic resilience.
