Predicting long-term changes in the diffusion coefficient of fly ash mixtures

While the diffusion coefficient is widely recognized as an important indicator of the durability of concrete. there is limited data available to assess how the diffusion coefficient continues to change over time. Typically, current practices measure the diffusion coefficient of a mixture within 90 days. This work measures the change in the diffusion coefficient of 17 fly ashes (6 Class F and 11 Class C) at 20% and 40% replacement levels over a period ranging from 45 to 1000 days. These results are used to develop a simple yet accurate model that predicts the long-term diffusion coefficient of the mixtures based on the bulk CaO, SiO2, and total equivalent alkalis (Na2Oeq) of the fly ash. This tool is helpful because it uses a few bulk oxides to predict the performance of different types and amounts of fly ash replacement with respect to the long-term diffusion coefficient.
